It Is Dangerous To Go Alone; Week 3

  1. Introduction
    1. Detroit: Become Human is a video game that explores the concept of personhood and challenges the audience, everyone, to consider the philosophical implications it brings up.
  2. Body
    1. Overview of game
    2. Mechanics
      1. Main character interactions
        1. Kara
          1. The relationship between the owner’s daughter, Alice and Kara shows how complex connections can be built with nonhumans.  Alice always clings to Kara and sees her as a mother figure. This relationship differs from ones built with
        2. Markus
          1. Markus is more humane than his owner’s son, Leo
          2. Leo attacks Markus because he is jealous of Markus’ and his owner’s relationship. The owner tells Markus to endure the attack
          3. Markus defends himself because Leo is upsetting Carl.
        3. Alice
          1. The reveal that Alice is an android is a great example for why it is difficult to determine who or what is human.
          2. Through the game, Alice is presented as a human girl because she gets cold, hungry, and sleeps. Kara is also ordered to take care of her in the beginning of the game.
          3. Eventually, it is revealed that she has been an android meant to replace his biological daughter. This is eye opening to the player because as she exhibits free will and emotions through the story, you are also hit with the realization that she is android as well. This helps the argument in that even if you were not convinced that androids could be human up to this point, it presents human to truly be an android.
        4. Connor(counter argument?)
      2. Societal change
        1. Public Opinion Bar
          1. The public opinion bar help to show that the android can contribute directly to social relationships.
          2. There is a bar meant to represent the public opinion towards the android revolution. This bar is directly affected by the actions you execute as their leader, Markus. The bar ranges from supportive to hated. News coverage represents what part of the bar the player is currently at.
          3. This is something other machines are not capable of. Commonly, machines have been the medium of social interactions between humans. However, in the game, the androids are seen the same way as people would see other people in a revolution instead of machines doing programmed actions. The news coverage shows how the public debated how they feel about the androids. After the exposition of the game, the anchors debate the legitimacy and morality of the uprising.
      3. Given the ability to choose
        1. Giving the option to choose projects the player’s free will on the game’s protagonists
          1. This mechanic makes it more difficult to see the characters not having their own ability to choose
  3. Conclusion
